Background

Oscar Grant –On New Years of 2009, Oscar Grant, a 22 year old Black man from Oakland, California, was coming home with friends on the BART train system. At the train station, there was a fight that resulted in the train police coming to the station and detaining several people. Grant initially broke free from the police, but got off the train when asked by the police and followed their directions. He was placed face down on the ground. While face down, Johannes Mehserle, the cop that had put him on the ground, pulled out his gun and shot him in the back. Oscar’s last words were “You shot me! I got a 4-year-old daughter!” This was caught on tape and shown on the Internet. This led to the police officer being charged with murder and a small riot Occured in Oakland. It is the first time that a police officer has been charged with murder for an event that happened while he was on duty. Because of the riots in Oakland, the trial of the cop has been moved to Los Angeles, and starts in downtown Los Angeles in June. In Los Angeles county the police have killed over 100 people in the last 3 years. Some of those people we truly dangerous others were innocent.
